Hummus is a staple in our vegan household. It's packed with plant-based protein, high in fiber, and it comes in so many yummy flavors. You can spread it on toast, use it as a dip for chips or veggies, add it to a burrito - the possibilities are endless. To sum it up, hummus gets me jazzed. It's also so very cheap to make, which is precisely why I started making my own. This basic hummus recipe has only 3 main ingredients. Make this "base" and then customize it to your taste by tossing in your favorite foods/flavors and blendin' it all up!
I recently purchased a food processor, which has really been a game-changer. I didn't think I would use it often, but it has proven to be very versatile for lots of different recipes. I've made salsa, sauces, purees, and hummus using this appliance and it has worked great! If you don't already have one, ya need one.
To make this hummus, you start with the 3 main ingredients: lagumes, tahini, and a citrus fruit. This will act as your "base" on which to add your other flavors. If you want something simple and versatile, just stick with this basic 3-part hummus.
3ish Ingredient Hummus
1 15.5 oz can of legumes
1 tbsp tahini
Juice of 1 citrus fruit
*Add 1/4-1/3 cup of water for preferred texture and s&p to taste.*
Legumes include beans, peas, and some nuts. I have found that chickpeas and black beans create a great base for hummus. Tahini is made from sesame seeds, think peanut butter but the sesame version. Lemon and lime are the two citrus fruits I add to my hummus, but you could probably add any citrus juice you like. (Get creative with it!)
Our Favorite Hummus Combos
Classic

chickpeas, tahini, lemon, garlic, s&p
Buffalo

chickpeas, tahini, lemon, Frank's hot sauce (to taste), s&p
Spicy Black Bean

black beans, tahini, lime, chipotle peppers and/or jalapeños, s&p
You can legit add WHATEVER flavors you like to make your own flavor combination. My next combo will probably, most definitely include olives!
