Puppy chow, muddy buddies, whatever you choose to call them, we can all agree that they never disappoint! Chocolatey and peanut buttery with the perfect amount of crunch. This treat takes me right back to my middle school sleepover days, when we would start the night off with a big batch of the stuff and finish it off before falling asleep mid sugar-coma. Don't be fooled, although this recipe is gluten-free and vegan, it is by no means "healthy"-- just putting it out there. It's all about moderation, am I right?!
There are two people in this world: the people who prefer puppy chow in clumps and the ones who like each square to be separated from their buddies. The latter people are the wrong people. I feel so strongly about this that I added a couple additional steps in order to ensure that these buddies stick together and form those deliciously irresistible clumps of goodness. (Trust me, the extra steps are worth it!)
Ingredients:
6 cups Rice Chex Cereal
2 cups creamy peanut butter
2 cups vegan chocolate chips (see my favorite brand here)
3 cups powdered sugar
1 clean kitchen trash bag
Steps: 1. Put one cup of PB and one cup V chocolate chips in a small bowl. Microwave for one minute.
2. Stir. Honestly you could just stop here because YUM! (see what I mean below)
3. Add your rice Chex to a large bowl.
4. Add the chocolatey-peanut-buttery goodness to the Chex and stir. Careful not to break any of those perfect little squares!
5. Now this is the unconventional part of the puppy chow-making. You're going to add one cup of powdered sugar to a clean trash bag. (You can also use a 2-gallon ziplock bag but (1) who has those on hand?!, and (2) it's not as much fun.) Spread the powdered sugar out in the bag so that the gooey Chex concoction won't stick to the bag. Then, add that gooey mixture to the sugary bag. Close the top of the bag well and shake, shake, shake!
If you would prefer the less clumpy (less delicious) version, simply add an additional cup of powdered sugar and shake. You're done - and wrong.
^ Make sure to have fun with it.
6. Now to get those irresistible clumps! Put those newly sugary squares back into the large mixing bowl. Repeat steps 1 & 2. Add this new chocolatey-PBy mixture to your sugary Chex and stir to coat.
7. Last step! Add the remaining 2 cups of powdered sugar to the (slightly messy) trash bag. Then, put the double-coated Chex mixture into the sugary bag and give it one hearty final shake.
Yes, I am aware that this is extra. Trust me, it's worth it.
There you have it! The clumpiest, yummiest, least-healthy vegan/GF recipe you'll ever find on the internet. Enjoy & #treatyoself.
